Nursing Outlook Honors Linda Grabbe Research
In 2019, the first randomized controlled trial on the Community Resiliency Model (CRM)®, “The Community Resiliency Model® to Promote Nurse Well-Being” was conducted by Dr. Linda Grabbe, FNP-BC, PMHNP-BC, Melinda K. Higgins, Ph.D., Marianne Baird, Patricia Ann Craven, and Sarah San Fratello. This study was given the Excellence in Research Award by Nursing Outlook, the American Academy of Nursing's official journal. This journal provides innovative ideas for leaders in the nursing profession through peer-reviewed articles and timely reports. Each issue examines current issues and trends in nursing practice, education, and research offering progressive solutions to the challenges facing the profession.
This study was developed in response to the rising rates of secondary traumatic stress and burnout in nurses, causing a health crisis for first responders. A reported one-third of nurses experience poor mental health, secondary stress, and burnout.
The purpose of “The Community Resiliency Model to Promote Nurse Well-Being” was to determine whether a 3-hour CRM training, which introduces wellness skills and sensory awareness techniques, improved emotional balance in nurses. The findings suggest that nurses experience improved well-being, resiliency, secondary traumatic stress, and physical symptoms. Moreover, participants reported using CRM techniques for self-stabilization during stressful work events.
